01The context

What the Museu Virtual de la Moda is

The Museu Virtual de la Moda de Catalunya offers a digital journey through the history of fashion via more than 600 garments from 38 museums. It spreads and promotes Catalan textile heritage without relocating the pieces, keeping them tied to their territory and history.

02The challenge

Rigorous for specialists, clear for everyone

The brief was to offer a digital journey through the history of fashion with more than 600 garments from 38 museums, rigorous for specialists and, at the same time, understandable for the general public.

03The solution

Museum rigour, e-commerce navigation

The research, documentation, cataloguing and photography of each piece took close to a year and resulted in a database of more than 12,000 entries, synced to import the pieces onto the website almost automatically, cutting down time and human error. Each garment comes with its own rigorous record.

In the design, we thought about both audiences: a faceted catalogue with more than ten filters, a glossary to bring technical vocabulary closer, and a visual language familiar to the big fashion websites. The catalogue is the centrepiece: it presents the pieces like a current fashion e-commerce site, with the added ability to filter by historical period through a timeline that shows the evolution of clothing at a glance.
